ANTON CHEKHOV

Anton Chekhov (A Woman Without Prejudices): (1860-1904) was a Russian physician and writer of short stories and plays (The Sea Gull, Uncle Vanya, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard). Chekhov at 20 began writing for newspapers and magazines and after some critical recognition and encouragement wrote many short stories. By 1888, when we was 28, Chekhov had published a staggering 528 stories, about half of them comic. Unpretentious, lively and inventive, these comic stories have long been affectionately regarded in Russia, but publishers in the West, overawed by the prevailing image of Chekhov as a melancholy genius, have fought shy of Chekhov the down-to-earth humorist. A departure from his plays, his comic stories possess an infectious good humor and sense of fun.
