SUSAN APPEL
Susan
Appel is a professional Equity actress, director and teacher. As an actress,
Ms. Appel spent 8 years based in New York City, playing lead roles in regional
theatres and Shakespeare Festivals across the country. Favorite roles include
Isabella in Measure for Measure (Intiman Theatre), Helena in All’s
Well That Ends Well (Hartford Stage Company),
Rosalind As You Like It
(Syracuse Stage), Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker (GeVa
Theatre), Varya in The Cherry Orchard (Indiana Repertory Theatre), and
Chrissie in Dancing at Lughnasa (Alliance Theater Company). As a
director, Ms. Appel was an affiliated artist with New Georges, an Obie
award winning theatre collective dedicated to emerging women artists. Other New
York directing credits include The International Fringe Festival and The New
Jersey Shakespeare Festival. At Syracuse University, Ms. Appel directed several
productions: Blue Window, Measure For Measure, Stop Kiss, and a full
production of Mozart’s opera The Magic Flute. In addition, for two
consecutive years she directed the Syracuse University Presentation to the
Profession in New York City, a showcase of BFA acting students for agents,
casting directors, and producers of theatre, film, and television.
As a teacher,
she taught in three acting conservatories in Manhattan: Stella Adler
Conservatory of Acting, CAP 21 and the Atlantic Theatre Company. Also while in
New York, Ms. Appel held private master classes in Acting Shakespeare for
professionals and students, and she ran a private business providing audition
coaching for professionals working on Broadway and in film and television. Ms.
Appel spent four years as an Assistant Professor of Acting in the BFA and MFA
programs at Syracuse University.
Ms. Apple now
lives with her husband and son in Santa Maria, CA where she teaches acting at
PCPA.
